Removal Of Pebble Dash & Silicon Rendering Walls

For this exterior plastering project we removed pebble dashing and applied silicone rendering in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire.

We were contacted by a client in Bishop’s Stortford who had a problem with damp on the rear wall of their house. They had an issue with damp coming through the wall because an area of pebble dashing had blown and exposed the wall to the elements.

We visited the client to take a look at the wall and discuss the options. Apart from the damp, the pebble dashing had become unsightly and the client preferred to have the exterior wall rendered and painted. We recommended removing all of the pebble dash and replacing it with a white coloured silicone render from the Johnstone’s Storm Guard range. As the silicone render is already coloured it means the walls would not need painting or maintaining.

Why did they choose silicone render?

Protection & Insulation

Silicone render is great for covering exterior walls as is creates a protective barrier, shielding the brickwork from the elements. It also provides another layer of insulation, helping to retain heat and make your home more energy efficient.

Damp Proofing

Render also reduces the risk of damp as solid brick walls are liable to issues from penetrating damp, particularly in exposed areas. The added advantage of silicone render is that it is water repellent whilst being breathable.

Aesthetics

As the walls were pebble dashed and this needed to be removed it would be an extensive process to reveal the brickwork and make it look presentable. There might also be hidden elements that were concealed by the pebble dash that would be revealed. By applying render to the walls, we create a smooth, uniform finish that made the house presentable.

Silicon render is a great option for creating a high-quality finish and is available from various manufacturers in a range of colours. In this case the clients opted for a white render from Johnstone’s storm guard range.

The process for this property

1st
Preparation
Firstly, we removed the existing pebble dashing to bring the wall back to the brickwork, giving us a firm surface to work from.
2nd
Edges
We then applied beading around the corners and edges including windows and doors, to give us crisp edges.
3rd:
Key Coat
A ‘key’ coat is applied to the walls – a kind of base layer which bonds to the brickwork
4th:
Base Coat
A base coat is then applied to the surface with a fibreglass mesh under layer to provide extra strength and flexibility.
5th:
Top Coat
The ‘top coat’ silicone render is applied. This layer is the coloured render finish which is applied to give a smooth grainy finish.
